When Was the Quran Written?
The Holy Book was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) over a period of 23 years. The first revelation occurred in 610 CE, when the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was 40 years old and meditating in a cave on Mount Hira. The Angel Gabriel appeared to him and commanded him to recite the first verses of Surah Al-Alaq (Chapter 96), which he did. From that moment on, the revelations continued, coming to him at different times and places throughout his life.
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) would recite each revelation to his companions, who would memorize it and write it down. These written recordings were later compiled into a complete book, known as the Holy Book. The task of compiling the Holy Bookinto a single, standardized version was undertaken by the third Caliph, Uthman, in the 7th century CE.
